Sketching the story
We worked with PBS Kids and NASA to put together a cohesive sequence of storyboards that detailed the flow of the user experience from start to finish. As with every project, we started with minimally detailed sketches of objects, environments, and top-down overviews of the player path.
Once the sketched storyboards were completed and approved, we then created a moodboard to help define the design direction for the colored concepts that would follow.
Polishing the concepts
Knowing that PBS Kids and NASA wanted to appeal to a younger audience, and having to work within the limitations of a google cardboard app on mobile phones, we chose an art style that provided a sense of playful realism.
These colored concepts were then reassembled into a revised storyboard where it was tested with potential users before beginning development of the application.
Delivering the experience
The final experience was delivered as an iOS and Android application which can be downloaded to almost any mobile device and viewed through a cardboard VR viewer. In addition to the separate application, a PBS-branded VR headset was created and sold in stores through Wal-mart.
